Celebrate Black History Month
Lane Library celebrates Black History Month this February by proudly showcasing our diverse resources. We invite the Stanford Medicine community to visit the library (in-person or online) to explore our spaces and browse our collections.
Visit the D-CORE Space
Lane Library is home to the Diversity Center of Representation and Empowerment (D-CORE), a space open to any member of the Stanford Medicine community interested in issues of inclusion, diversity, and health equity. The D-CORE space can be used for meetings, casual conversations, and as a place to relax and study. Read more about the functionality of the space in the D-CORE Usage Policy Guide and consider reserving the space for your next meeting.

The D-CORE also features a book collection of fiction and nonfiction works by and for Black people, Indigenous people, and people of color (BIPOC). Explore the D-CORE collection’s print and digital books to find the next book for your reading list.

Explore our Medical History Center
Lane Library’s Medical History Center (MHC) is an excellent resource for conducting historical research, including how to locate and use primary source materials in Black history from archival repositories and beyond.
Recently, the Medical History completed work on a collection of original historical documents, primarily from the 1960s and 1970s, on activism and initiatives related to race and gender at Stanford Medicine. The collection includes historical materials for groups such as the Black Advisory Committee and the Black United Front. The collection is now open to researchers and you can explore the online finding aid, which describes the contents of the collection.
Press releases from the same period show the way that Stanford Medicine sought to portray these actions and initiatives. The Medical History Center has digitized hundreds of press releases from the School of Medicine’s Office of Communications for the years 1959-1986; they are online and full-text searchable.
Finally, the current exhibit in Lane Library, “Histories of Latino/a and Latinx Medicine in America,” makes reference to the role of free Blacks in the Spanish conquest of the Americas and of healthcare practitioners of African ancestry in California’s Mexican period, such as Juana Briones. You can find an online version of the exhibit in both English and Spanish.
Navigate our MultiCultural Health Guide
Lane Library’s Multicultural Health Guide contains a wealth of resources on the topics of medical racism, antiracism, health disparities, and cultural competency. Resources from Lane Library, Stanford Libraries, and government resources are included in this guide with links to books, journals, and websites providing diverse perspectives and information to support your learning.
