Dean Minor’s Winter Reading List

Lloyd B. Minor, MD, Dean of Stanford School of Medicine, recently shared his 2024 winter reading list on social media (LinkedInFacebook, & Instagram). Describing his recommendations, Dean Minor stated:

As the holidays approach, I hope everyone can enjoy some time to rest and reengage with the things that bring you joy. For me, reading continues to be one of my favorite escapes, and I wanted to share a few books I especially enjoyed this year.

Exploring Innovations in Health and AI

  • Mastering AI: A Survival Guide to Our Superpowered Future by Jeremy Kahn. A visionary look at AI’s transformative potential and its impact on our daily lives.
  • Early Detection: Catching Cancer When It’s Curable by Bruce Ratner and Adam Bonislawski. An essential discourse on the pivotal role of early intervention in transforming patient outcomes.
  • The Invisible Kingdom: Reimagining Chronic Illness by Meghan O’Rourke. A compelling exploration of chronic illnesses, advocating for a deeper understanding and betterment of human health.

Celebrating the Power of Storytelling

  • James: A Novel by Percival Everett. A masterful reimagining of Huckleberry Finn from Jim’s perspective.
  • How Do You Feel?: One Doctor’s Search for Humanity in Medicine by Jessi Gold. An intimate glimpse into the practice of medicine, underpinned by compassion and empathy.
  • Where Rivers Part: A Story of My Mother’s Life by Kao Kalia Yang. A moving testament to perseverance and resilience in the face of daunting challenges.

Print copies of all the books are available at Lane Library. To access the ebooks, you need a SUNet ID for login. Many ebooks are limited to one simultaneous user.

Many of the ebooks are available through Stanford Libraries’ Overdrive platform. Use your SUNet ID to log in to Overdrive to explore a curated collection of ebooks and audiobooks. To access materials on your mobile device, download Overdrive’s Libby app. Many public libraries also use Overdrive and the Libby app to provide easy access to leisure reading materials. Check out your local public library to explore options! You can log into the Northern California Digital Library on Overdrive with a public library card from the City of Palo Alto Public Library and many other local libraries.
