Dia de los Muertos 2024
The Offices of Medical Student Wellness (OMSW) and Student Affairs (OMSA) is hosting our 7th annual Día de los Muertos altar from November 4th to November 6th in D-CORE (located on the bottom floor of Lane Library) for the Stanford Medicine community. Please bring photos or your ofrenda (offerings) honoring loved ones to the altar on November 4th starting at 8:30AM. For those unable to attend in person, submit tributes electronically at https://bit.ly/omswddlm2024, On Wednesday, November 6, from 9:30 to 11 AM join us in making paper flowers in D-CORE. Flowers, especially marigolds, traditionally adorn altars as their scent guides the ancestors back.
Dias de los Muertos (November 1 and 2) is a Latin American celebration that dates back more than 3,000 years and reunites and honors ancestors, family, and friends. This indigenous tradition offers time for the living to commune and share stories of those who have passed. It became widely celebrated in the United States as a means for identity-building and recognizing our indigenous roots.
We invite you to join this tradition of honoring and remembering family, friends, and other beings such as pets lost over the years. The altar will be assembled Monday, November 4, and remain up through Wednesday, November 6. Please bring a copy of a photo of someone you want to honor, or items that remind you of them. If you are working or studying remotely and wish to participate, submit a photo or ofrenda (poem, name…) for electronic altar. Look for altar images on OMSW’s Instagram feed (@stanfordOMSW) and share photos of your altar.
We will disassemble the altar the afternoon of Wednesday, November 6. Your photos and recuerdos (memories) will be available for pick up in D-CORE.
OMSW will be on hand and to help you make flowers on Wednesday, November 6, from 9:30AM to 11AM in D-CORE.
