ChronosHub: A New Database to Explore Open Access Options

In celebration of Open Access Week, we’re introducing ChronosHub—a powerful, researcher-focused database that helps you choose where and how to publish open access, comply with funder mandates, and avoid unexpected article processing charges (APCs). ChronosHub brings together journal policies, licensing options, costs, and Stanford institutional agreements in one place so you can make informed, time-saving decisions.

The Journal Guide gives you peace of mind when selecting journals, so you don’t have to worry about article processing charges (APCs) or non-compliance with your funder’s policies. If you are a Stanford researcher, you can look up your favorite journals or search and filter to get to a selection of journals that match your research areas. Select a funder to see whether the journals are compliant or not, and check the filter ‘Journals with agreements’ to limit the list to journals for which the APCs are fully or partially waived.

Key Features for Researchers:

  • Filter to Journals with Agreements: Use the “Journal List” filter to quickly limit the journals list to only titles that have agreements with Lane Library. We have agreements with over 1200 journals to reduce or eliminate APCs for Stanford authors.
  • Journal Finder: Search and compare journals across disciplines and publishers. See at a glance whether a title supports gold, hybrid, or green open access, along with license options (e.g., CC BY) and self-archiving policies and embargoes.
  • Cost transparency: Review listed APCs and available discounts, and check whether your article may be covered under Stanford’s open access publishing agreements. ChronosHub also flags steps to ensure your affiliation is recognized during submission.
  • Funder compliance: Filter by funder to identify journals and routes that meet specific requirements (including public access and license mandates) and view repository deposit guidance.
  • Submission guidance: Follow clear, journal-specific instructions—from selecting the right license to acknowledging funding—so your article is processed correctly the first time.
