Stanford Health AI Week June 2-6 with microchip design

AI in Healthcare: Tips for Using Elicit, OpenEvidence, and Speechify.

To celebrate Stanford Health AI Week (June 2-6), we are sharing a round-up of the AI tools our research librarians love to streamline your research. Elicit, OpenEvidence, and Speechify are three AI-powered tools that can assist faculty, staff, and students with literature searching and daily research workflows.

Elicit: Literature Reviews and Data Extraction

How to Create an Account: Elicit offers multiple “tiered” plans, including the “Basic” plan with some of the features below.

Features Include:

  • Research Summaries: Elicit allows you to input any research question and generate concise summaries of peer-reviewed articles from a vast database of over 125 million academic papers.
  • Customize Data Extraction from Abstracts and/or Full-text PDFs: Add columns for methodology, outcomes, interventions, limitations, and more, and have Elicit extract the data across multiple studies.
  • Export and Organize: Depending on what subscription tier you use, you can download extracted data as CSV files for integration into presentations, manuscripts, or collaborative projects.

OpenEvidence: Evidence-Based Clinical Answers

How to Create an Account: Open Evidence can be used freely, but users are required to upload their “credentials,” e.g., a National Provider Identifier for physicians.

Features Include:

  • Rapid Clinical Summaries: Enter clinical questions to receive synthesized, evidence-based answers with
  • Interactive Features: Open Evidence generates potential follow-up questions to help you refine searches or explore related clinical scenarios.
  • Documentation and Verification: Always verify that the evidence cited actually answers the question you asked.
  • Privacy and Compliance: Open Evidence claims to be HIPAA compliant, but nevertheless avoids entering protected health information (PHI).

Speechify: Listen to Medical Literature On-the-Go

How to Create an Account: Stanford has a subscription to Speechify. Follow the link above to create an account.

Features Include:

  • Convert Text to Audio: Upload PDFs, articles, or emails and have Speechify read them aloud while commuting, exercising, etc.
  • Flexible Learning: Playback speed and narrators are customizable.
  • Accessibility: Speechify is particularly valuable for those with visual impairments or those who prefer auditory learning.

Integrating these AI tools into your academic workflow can reduce time spent on literature reviews, enhance evidence-based practice, and support continuous learning. Always combine AI-generated answers with a critical appraisal of the cited sources.
