The Lane Medical Library is pleased to announce the Antiracism Book Club to the Stanford community.

Hosted by Suzette Shipp, Life Science Technologist in the Lorry Lokey Stem Cell Research Building, this new, media-based discussion group aims to examine the structural racialized bias in medicine, medical research, and health care delivery.
This activity has been approved for AMA PRA Category 1 Credit(s)™ by the Stanford University School of Medicine.

We are kicking off the club at noon on July 17, 2020, with a discussion of short readings and videos on medical racism. We’ve included two optional books for those who want to delve into the theme of medical racism through longer narrative formats; The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks, by Rebecca Skloot and Black Man in a White Coat, by Damon Tweedy, M.D.

We invite you to read, listen, engage, and learn. Please join us via Zoom,  and we encourage you to participate via our Stanford Slack Workspace “antiracismbookclub” if you are unable to attend or want to keep the conversation going.

Planned book club meetings:

Please register through the antiracism book club website to receive Zoom meeting info.

  1. I have heard a lot of people interested in a book club for diversity / equity / inclusion topics. Is there a possibility that this might be a standing book club?

    1. Thanks for your feedback, Deepa. I will let the group organizers know that you are interested in more sessions. If you are interested in participating in more programming related to diversity, equity, and inclusion, check out the week of events the Office of Diversity in Medical Education has planned for SOM’s Diversity Week (Oct. 5-9th).
